Enjoy a romantic city tour in Daegu
Msr profile 4en Msr profile m4en
Last spring, when lively trees were in full bloom, we decided to take a trip to Daegu, which is about two hours away from Seoul via KTX. As advised by our Korean friends, we could easily find our way around and that we would not get confused by complicated subway systems, as there are only two subway lines in Daegu, therefore, we opted to travel around the city via subway.

"83타워 은/는 어떻게 가야 하나요?" How do I get to 83 Tower ?

"83타워 (으)로 가주세요. 이곳의 주소는 대구 달서구 두류공원로 200 입니다." Please go to 83 Tower . It is located at 200, Duryugongwon-ro, Dalseo-gu, Daegu, Korea.

Unlike the ones in Seoul, Daegu’s subway tickets are round like a coin. It was convenient to travel around on subway, as the same price of KRW 1,100 is applied, regardless of the distance traveled or which stop you get off at. But, as the coin-like ticket was easy to lose, we had to be extra careful not to lose it throughout the trip.

We took Exit No. 15 at Duryu Station and walked for about ten minutes. Our destination was ‘E-World 83 Tower (formerly known as Daegu Tower),’ with an observatory to look out across Daegu. We feasted our eyes on the view that unfolded below us at the observatory, which was on the 77th floor. Tickets (KRW 5,000 for adults) for the observatory are sold at a ticket office on the second floor and the observatory stays opens until 10 at night.

The following morning, we went to ‘Gyesan Catholic Church,’ a red bricked building standing tall, just west of Daegu’s bustling downtown area. Daegu has long been the center of Catholicism in Korea. At the center of it has been Gyesan Catholic Church. Introduced in a KBS program <One Night Two Days>, this is one of Korea’s three leading Catholic churches, together with Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul and Jeondong Catholic Cathedral in Jeonju. The two steeples and magnificiently stained glass adorning the windows… Gyesan Catholic Church is famous as a Gothic style church with beautiful architecture. Across the road from this church is 'C’est La Vie', a coffee house where a TV drama known as ‘Sarangbi’ starring Jang Geun-seok was filmed. Many people will often recommend visitors to pay a visit to this coffee house for a relaxing cup of coffee and get a sense for why a TV drama was chosen to film here.

Seomun Market, which we visited for lunch, was filled with restaurants serving popular local delicacies. Unable to make a decision, we were lucky enough to be informed that the most popular were ‘Napjak Mandu’ and ‘Kaljebi.’ ‘Kaljebi’ is a cross beteen the noodle dishes of ‘Kalguksu’ and ‘Sujebi’ and is served in the famed ‘Noodle Alley’ located in between District 1 and District 4 of Seomun Market. The moderately spiced dish was quite good for our tastes, as we can't easily take in some of the hottest dishes that you can find in Korea. A bowl of Kaljebi is only KRW 3,000, which is an excellent deal.

Daegu’s ‘Yangnyeongsi,’ a traditional oriental medicine market, has been supplying oriental medicinal herbs since 1658. You can receive simple oriental medicinal therapies, such as acupuncture and moxibustion, and buy oriental medicinal herbs, such as ginseng, at low prices. We took a look around all the small alleys of Yakjeonolmok that were filled with an array of wonderful medicinal herbs and ingredients that, before then, were mostly unfamiliar to us.

   2

Yangnyeongsi Museum of Oriental Medicine, located in the middle of Yakjeongolmok, reveals the history of Yangnyeong-si and Yakjeongolmok. We could also receive a simple heath checkup and try traditional oriental herbal teas. This museum offers various hands-on learning programs, which helped us to experience the wonders of oriental medicine. We paid KRW 3,000 for an ‘oriental herbal soap’ class that went on for around 45 minutes. Made with oriental herbs of our choosing, the soap, as we were told, can be used even on the soft skin of a baby. The fragrant soap that I made was quite large in size, so I expect it's going to last for some time. (To take advantage of these interesting programs, make a reservation through their website or visit 30 minutes before the respective program begins at the museum.)

A festival is held every May here, and visitors can participate in colorful events including the Medicinal Herb Slicing Contest, Medicinal Herb Drawing Contest, Free Oriental Medicine Health Checkup, and the Medicinal Herbal Food Exhibition.

Visitors can also purchase Oriental medicine items, including red ginseng extracts, at the museum shop.

The weather was beautiful, so we opted to head to ‘Dalseong Park’, located about 20 minutes away from the Museum of Oriental Medicine. Within its beautifully maintained landscape, Dalseong Park has a zoo, which certainly makes for a great stroll. We came across a lot of young families pushing along baby strollers and couples enjoying a date, while sharing fluffy cotton candy. Dalseong Park opens from 10 in the morning to six in the evening. The admission is free.

‘Gopchang (pork or beef intestine)’ is a must-try delicacy of Daegu. In particular, the marinated and grilled Gopchang served in Anjirang Market is famous for not only the taste, but also for their generous portions. Marinated Gopchang is grilled on a briquette fire and dipped in Doenjang (fermented soybean paste) sauce. The flavor combination is simply amazing. The restaurants along Anjirang Gopchang Streeet use a variety of marinades, which are not available in Seoul, offering yet another reason to choose from a range of flavors that best suits your taste. Gopchang comes in a large bowl, which is enough for three adults. Be advised that the peak time on Gopchang Street is around 9 in the evening.

Daegu Anjirang market is a traditional market famous for Yangnyeom Gopchang (marinated tripe). In this place, spicy marinated tripe is grilled over briquette fire, and then dipped in soybean paste seasoning to give you that clean taste when you eat it. One or two servings cannot be ordered. Instead, it is served on one large bowl (about 500g) at an affordable price. Currently, in this market, there is a concentration of 42 Gobchang restaurants, and 9 pm is the peak time.

You can treat yourself to Daegu Makchang (beef entrails) and Gopchang (tripe) in this street – considered the birthplace of Makchang Gui (grilled beef entrails). The more you chew, the more intense the flavor becomes. They are grilled on a gridiron over briquette fire and then dipped in watery soybean sauce with leeks and green chilli peppers. Over 20 thriving restaurants are clustered in this alley in Daemyeong-dong.

Until then, Daegu was an unfamiliar city to us. But, it proved to be a gorgeous city surrounded by gently rolling hills and fragments of Korea’s modern history. While imagining how every corner or alleyway would have looked in the past, try taking in the historical feel of Daegu or spending some time in the crowded market streets. You will certainly be captivated by the charm of this city.
