When I was mulling over where to go for my weekend trip, Busan came to mind. Not long ago, one of my friends mentioned that Busan is a great city for a visit because of its convenient transportation and the magnificent views of downtown and the sea. Without much hesitation, we bought train tickets and set out on a trip to Busan, a city filled with an abundance of tourist attractions and tantalizing local cuisine.

We hopped on the KTX early in the morning and arrived in Busan at 10am. First, we visited the restaurant named 'Choryang Milmyeon' located in front of Busan Station, so we could try out one of the most highly recommended local dishes of Busan. The restaurant was already packed full of hungry customers. The noodle dish of milmyeon is one of the most loved local dishes, even for a city like Busan, which is known to possess a great deal of local food options. We opted to visit Choryang Milmyeon among one of three must-visit restaurants of Busan. A bowl of milmyeon costs just a mere ₩4,000. Because of its great taste and reasonable price, many tourists visit this restaurant. Despite the restaurant owner's concern that milmyeon may be too spicy for foreigners, we ordered it anyways and tried mul milmyeon (milmyeon in an icy cool broth) and a bibim milmyeon (milmyeon in a spicy broth).

This dish of refreshing and spicy noodles is one of Busan’s local foods. Noodles made of flour and potato and sweet potato starchare put in cold beef bone broth. Since it is chewier than ordinary noodles and less tough than Naengmyeon (buckwheat noodles), the texture is pleasantly chewy. “Naeho Naengmyeon” restaurant is known as the original Milmyeon restaurant; other old restaurants such as “Hwangsan Milnaengmyeon,” “Gaya Milmyeon,” and “Gaegeum Milmyeon” are also gaining popularity with their own know-how on broth and seasoning.

After having a late breakfast, we went to Taejongdae, known for its 'superb view of Busan'. Taejongdae is on the coast, located 30 minutes away from Busan Station by bus. When I gazed upon the steep cliffs and the rocky landscape while on a cruise, I felt any lingering stresses of life just slip away. A cruise ticket costs ₩10,000 for an adult. There are many kinds of cruises and tourists can select one from various schedules. It takes around four hours to see Taejongdae on foot. Of course, enjoying the views on foot is great, but I recommend taking the Danubi Train (₩1,500 for an adult), if it suits you.

Tajongdae is a coastal landform rising 250m above sea level and featuring shore cliff and strange rocks and bizarre stones. King Taejong Muyeol, the 29th king of the Silla Dynasty (from 654 to 661) apparently used to enjoy archery here because of the magnificent view of this coast. The lighthouse, which has been around for over 100 years, and the observatory where you can see even Daemado Isalnd of Japan are major attractions of Tajongdae.

Jagalchi Market is one of the must-visit places of Busan. Jagalchi Market is a seafood market located in front of the Jagalchi Cooperative Market of the Busan office of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives. Jagalchi Market offers a variety of seafood such as cod, herring, hairtail, clam, and seaweed, all caught on the coast of Busan and Korea's South Sea, and at reasonable prices. All fish are caught in the morning of each day, so visitors can be assured of fresh and hearty seafood right from the market. If you visit the market at dawn, you can see the auction of freshly-caught fish, every day. In addition, there are many restaurants that can serve hoe (raw fish) using live fish brought in by customers who bought fish from the market. After looking around the market, we bought some seafood and entered one of these restaurants. It was my first time trying hoe, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but its fresh taste harmonized with the great maeuntang (spicy fish soup) that they also served.

As the biggest fish market in Korea, this place was created in the 1920s. You can still see the old market scenes of people working hard to sell goods, shouting at the top of their voices. You can also buy fresh seafood caught on the sea off Busan at affordable prices and eat Hoe sliced on the spot.

After savoring the hoe at Jagalchi Market, we headed to Gamcheon Culture Village, 15 minutes away from the market. Gamcheon Culture Village is a wall-painting village lined with houses of various colored roofs, situated on a steep hill. We bought a stamp tour village map (₩2,000) at the small museum at the entrance of the village. If you visit all nine sites of the village by following the fish-shaped arrows on the walls of the alleys, you can easily get the most out of this experience. We didn't have much time left, so we focused on following the course. The wide views of multi-colored houses contrasted nicely with the blue sea in the background.

Gamcheon-dong is a mountain town stacked in layers along the mountain ridge. This poor village became famous when it started to be called the ‘Machu Picchu” of Asia because of the murals painted by young artists on the external walls of the buildings, fascinated as they were by the landscapes of this area. A number of photographers visit here to take pictures of this village, where citizens’ daily life and art are in harmony.

When we came down from the village on the local bus, we found Gukje International Market with its wide range of items that include household goods, vintage clothing, sundries, imports, and so much more. We briefly looked around the market and then went to BIFF Square to try some seed hotteok. This famed street pastry of Busan, known as 'seed hotteok' (₩1,000), became more popular after singer Lee Seung-gi ate some on the KBS TV show '2 Days & 1 Night'. Unlike hotteok from other regions, it tasted more nutty, thanks to the abundance of seeds and other ingredients such as nuts, pumpkin seeds, raisins, and sunflower seeds. Although we had to wait in line for a long time to try seed hotteok, its savory taste and chewy texture were worth the wait. If you visit Busan someday, I highly recommended that you try it out.

In this market, there is such a wide range of goods traded that people say there is nothing you cannot get here. Recently, it has become popular for its unique fashion items including clothes, shoes, and bags.

As people often say 'Busan is synonymous with Haeundae Beach', Haeundae Beach is the Busan's leading tourist attraction visited by tens of thousands of tourists. Its views of the open sea, vast sandy beach, and glamorous lights of skyscrapers and hotels lined up along the seashore, all help set a sophisticated mood. In addition, its romantic night views are the best place to enjoy the sea at night. Haeundae Beach is very crowded with tourists in the summer, so you'd be best to visit here at any other time, in order to relax and enjoy the sound of waves.

This is a popular place visited by lots of people every summer to avoid the heat. The more than 10,000 beach parasols installed in this area have landed it in the Guinness Book of World Records. The large, sandy beach and shallow water are perfect for bathing in the sea. Around the beach, yachting center, luxury hotels, and shopping centers are clustered.

The magnificent views of Taejongdae, sprawling Haeundae Beach, its glamorous night scenery, and an abundance of cuisine gave me unforgettable memories of Busan. I strongly recommend that every visitor to Korea takes the time to see Busan!
