Paju is a great city for shopaholics. This is because the main branches of Korea’s major premium outlets, Lotte and Shinsegae Premium Outlets, are located here. The world’s luxury brands can be purchased at discounted prices in Paju all year round, and the outlets boast larger, less crowded spaces than malls in Seoul. Price and quality comparisons can easily be made, as various brands are all in one place. Even strolling around and window shopping is more enjoyable in Paju.

11

Lotte Premium Outlets is characterized by its wide variety of choices, which includes both luxury brands and low-to-mid cost local brands. Shinsegae Premium Outlets is known for having many luxury brands that are not easily found in local department stores. Lotte Premium Outlets is a 5-10 minute walk from Skinanniversary Beauty Town, so they are good places to visit together. Visitors are amazed at the sheer scale of the place, which is comprised of two major blocks (A and B) and several annexes. The building is organized in a street shop style square, and you can shop along the inner side of the building in an open space.

Lotte Premium Outlets’ luxury brands include Prada, Mulberry, and Montblanc (the fourth ever Montblanc outlet store), and many popular local brands such as MCM, Louis Quatorze, and Bean Pole. There are also plenty of other stores and facilities such as a large supermarket, food court, bookstore, movie theater, and a Pororo Kids Café – making it easy for the whole family to have an enjoyable time.

A6

The small river between the outlet’s A and B block is crossed by a bridge called “Samhyeongyo”, providing access between the two buildings. There are also benches on the bridge where visitors can admire the surrounding scenery while enjoying the river breeze or give their weary legs a break from shopping while enjoying the outdoor fountain and artwork. On the third floor rooftop area there is an observatory with views of the Hwanghaebuk-do Province. Have fun appreciating this historic sight after shopping, as it can only be seen in Paju.

13

If you are in need of assistance, information centers are on the first floor of each block, A and B. If needed, the attendant can even call a taxi for you.

  19 fotor collage

The village offers such a wide array of museums that visitors will have difficulty selecting which ones to visit, with examples including the Hanlip Toy Museum, Museum of Modern History of Korea, Trick Art Museum, and the Pottery Museum. Because the buildings - each with their own personalities - are spread out over a wide 6 expanse of space measuring about 50,000m2, visitors are recommended to use a map during their trip; these are freely available from the Heyri Information Center. Tickets to various museums may also be purchased here. Also dotted about the village is an array of unique sculptures that can be enjoyed during exploration of the various attractions.

The largest structure in the village is a multi-complex called The Step, located off Exit 4. As its name suggests, Provence is a themed village reminiscent of the small southern French town of the same name. This petite village is an elaborate assembly of colorfully-painted buildings, featuring cozy restaurants, cafés, bakeries, florists, home interior design stores, and more. Visiting the entire village does not take too long due to its small size, however due to Provence’s delightful boutiques, fountain pond, and lovely flowers planted throughout, visitors will find themselves strolling slowly throughout the village’s streets while appreciating its charms. Although Provence famously appeared in the popular Korean television drama My Love from the Star, it has always been sought out by couples as a dating spot thanks to its romantic atmosphere.

A10

As soon as they set foot into the village, visitors are greeted by the sweet smell of freshly-baked bread. The Provence Bakery and the Ryu Jae-eun Bakery fill the air constantly with the smell of bread. The Provence Bakery has become especially popular for its ‘Kiss Ring’ bread, a garlic bread made using all-natural butter and high-quality garlic from the Uiseong region, which it created for the occasion of Pope Francis’s visit to Korea in 2014. The bakery is easily located, as these circular breads can be seen hanging off the columns at the entrance.

27

Past the bakery, a scented trail smelling of herbs leads to a glass greenhouse garden where all sorts of flowers and plants are cultivated. Inhaling the scent of the flowers, and drinking herbal tea at the café inside the greenhouse, one feels as if their entire body has been infused with an herbal fragrance. Visitors may also purchase various goods made from herbs such as aromatic air fresheners, bath products, potpourri and more at the Living Shop, accessible from the greenhouse.

A11

When the sun sets, Provence Village becomes even more beautiful as its lights are lit one by one. Held each year from December until the end of September (after 7 pm), the Provence Festival of Lights is by far the best way of enjoying a night view of Paju. The entrance to the festival is a dazzling tunnel of lights that leads visitors to a new world, consisting of approximately 4 million illuminations that unfold before them. Light sculptures inspired from Disney fairy tales, or bluish lights that project overflowing waves, and various other glimmering beacons offer fantastic scenes for the visitors.

Tip. Getting to Provence Village from Heyri Art Village

There are a couple of different ways to reach Provence Village from Heyri. The first involves taking the No. 036 bus, which stops across the street from gates #1 and #4 of Heyri Art Village. However, bus intervals are rather long, so traveling on foot, which takes 25 minutes, is recommended. To do this, simply follow Heyri-ro Street to Seongdong Sageori Junction, and then make a right onto Saeori-ro Street. Go straight until arriving at Provence Village.

Choegangdarinui Jip Goguryeo Restaurant - Crispy Grilled Chicken Garnished with Deodeok

Chuncheon is undoubtedly the best place to taste authentic dak-galbi (spicy stir-fried chicken), however there is also a variation of this dish known as deodeok dak-galbi available in Paju. The deokdeok dak-galbi at Choegangdarinui Jip Goguryeo is marinated chicken grilled on charcoal together with deodeok (bellflower root) that produces a zesty flavor. Usually the dak-galbi is based on a marinade using gochujang, but one based on soy sauce is available as well. The crispy and slightly-bitter deodeok on top of the chicken retains the savory texture of the meat for even more flavor.
