Chungcheongnam-do, Seeking out Old Cultural Heritage of Baekje
There is a place offering beautiful springtime scenery at harmony with the sea as well as a chance to vividly experience Korean history from fourteen centuries ago. This place is located in the mid-southern part of the Korean peninsula, at Taean and Buyeo in Chungcheongnam-do Province, called Chungnam for short. Famous for its chimerical sunsets over the Yellow Sea, as well as its expansive tidal flats, the county of Taean is also home to Cheollipo Arboretum, which overlooks the seashore. Every April, Taean hosts the ‘Taean Tulip Festival’ where fields of fully bloomed tulips welcome visitors. Not so far away at Buyeo County, traces of the ancient kingdom of Baekje (18BCE–660CE) may be discovered throughout the city. Visitors can also learn about Sabi, the kingdom’s last capital, at Baekje Culture Land before spending a tasteful evening at the Lotte Buyeo Resort.

001

Visitors will not regret selecting Buyeo National Museum as their first destination at Buyeo. The museum is only 15 minutes away by feet from the Buyeo Intercity Bus Terminal, and offers an unparalleled experience of Buyeo’s history and culture. The Buyeo kingdom existed from 18 BCE to 660CE, and its history can be largely divided into three periods. The Sabi Period, named after the last capital of the kingdom (538CE–660CE), was a golden age of Baekje’s later period culture.

2

An outdoor exhibition greets visitors as soon as they pass the museum entrance, and it displays stone pagodas, statues, monuments and other relics from Baekje and Goryeo (918–1392) kingdoms. The museum complex consists of a permanent exhibition, special exhibition, children’s museum, as well as a performance hall. The enormous Buyeo Seokjo (a stone vessel used to store water) is most impressive, and can be seen receiving sunshine through the open ceiling. It is on display at the central lobby of the permanent exhibition hall, where most of the main relics are preserved.

5

Four exhibition halls surround the Buyeo Seokjo and present the history and culture of Baekje chronologically, counter-clockwise, from prehistoric times to the kingdom’s decline. The first exhibition hall displays Baekje’s pre-historic relics. The second hall exhibits relics that demonstrate the quintessence of Baekje’s artistry, including the masterpiece Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje. The third hall displays relics related to Baekje’s flourishing Buddhist culture, and finally the last hall is filled with treasures that have been contributed by over 50 donors.

6

If there is one piece that must be seen, it is the Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje displayed in the second exhibition hall. It is an elaborate piece that displays an astonishing technique and metalcraft for its time, and has come to symbolize Baekje. A model of it can be found in any souvenir shop in Buyeo. Other major artworks of Baekje exhibited at the museum include lotus patterned roofing tiles that attest to the kingdom’s flourishing Buddhist culture, the Baekje Stone Sarira Casket with the Inscription of King Chang (Korea’s oldest casket), and a reproduction of the Seosan Rock-carved Buddha Triad, which is representative of the ‘Baekje smile’ motif.

002

Gungnamji Pond was a garden from a royal villa of the Baekje kingdom, and was also Korea’s first artificial pond. It is a 20 minute walking distance away from the Buyeo National Museum. According to records, in 634CE a hole was dug on the southern end of the palace and filled with water, and an island was created at its center. It is said that the ruler of Baekje at this time, King Mu and his queen, enjoyed boating at the pond.

If you try searching for Gungnamji Pond on a map, you will see a huge pond at the center and a sprawling walking trail shaped like a fishing net. The pond was renovated in the mid-1960s and measures only about a third of its original size. At the center of the pond is an island modeled after a mountain that appears in a Chinese legend. A bridge divides the pond into two and leads to the island where a pavilion named Poryongjeong sits on top of it. Altogether, the pond and bridge creates a sweeping landscape that resembles an Asian painting. The scenery is even more elegant in the evening when the pond is illuminated and the light reflects off the water.

003

Taking a stroll at the pond is ideal in April, when the drooping leaves of the weeping willows sway to and fro with the wind and cast a cooling shadow. Carps, turtles, frogs, cranes and other organisms that live in the pond may also be observed there. In July, the annual Seodong Lotus Festival takes place here, and the sight of countless full bloomed lotuses may be enjoyed, along with nightly parades, launching sky lanterns and other popular activities.

11

Enjoy a variety of lotus-based cuisine

There are many restaurants around Gungnamji Pond that use lotus in their cooking. You can stop by the restaurants ‘Baekjehyang’ or ‘Sabihyang,’ both located on the alley that leads to Gungnamji Pond from the Buyeo National Museum, or the ‘Yeonkkochiyagi,’ a quiet and secluded restaurant that you can enjoy after visiting the Pond. If you order the yeonipbap jeongsik (lotus wrapped rice set meal), you will get fragrant, sticky rice with nuts wrapped around enormous lotus leaves, served with numerous side dishes including crispy lotus salad, fried lotus, lotus root jorim, lotus kimchi and more.

Cost: Yeonipbap jeongsik - around 12,000 won per person (*minimum 2 persons)

004

Baekje Cultural Land is a gigantic historical theme park that includes Sabiseong, the ancient Buyeo capital restored to its original appearance, the Baekje Historical Museum, Lotte Buyeo Resort, Korea National University of Cultural Heritage, and other facilities. Sabiseong is located at the heart of the theme park. It was constructed after an extensive period of historical research, and it took 17 years to reproduce the palaces, Buddhist temples and other buildings of the time period. As most of the remnants from the Buyeo of fourteen centuries ago have long since disappeared, it had only been possible to imagine what that time period was like.  The creation of Baekje Cultural Land helps us see a vivid, real-life representation of what life would have looked like back then.

Sabiseong’s main attractions include the Sabigung Palace, an ancient royal palace; Neungsa Temple, one of Baekje’s leading Buddhist temples at the time; a village representing the lifestyles of its denizens by economic class; Wiryeseong, one of the first royal palaces built at the establishment of the kingdom; and more. All of royal palaces from the Three Kingdoms Period have disappeared except for Sabigung Palace, which has been uniquely restored. Three courses (including the Baekje Historical Museum) are offered for visits to Sabigung Palace, each lasting 1, 2 or 3 hours respectively.

14

Measuring a total of 4492㎡, the reproduced version of Sabigung Palace features three main halls: Cheonjeongjeon, the main hall where the political and administrative affairs of the state were tended to; Munsajeon, located to the east, which served as the king’s main office; and finally Mudeokjeon to the west, connected by corridors. In order to reach Cheonjeongjeon Hall, you must enter the palace through the gigantic Jeongyangmun Gate, which opens up to an expansive square. Afterwards, visitors pass through another gate named Cheonjeongmun Gate. Important events for the kingdom were held here, and foreign ambassadors were welcomed at Cheonjeongjeon Hall, which stood magnificently, much like a symbol of the Baekje civilization that was flourishing at the time.

The Neungsa Temple was originally located in Neungsan-ri, Buyeo-eup. It was built by King Wideok in order to pray for peaceful repose of his deceased father’s spirit, King Seong. The rebuilt temple reproduces the dimensions of the original, including the space between structures and even the intervals between pillars, all based on the artifacts unearthed from the original site. In 1993, an investigative dig was conducted at Neungsan-ri in order to determine if a parking lot could be built there. Two of Baekje’s most reknown masterpieces, including the Gilt-bronze Incense Burner and the Stone Sarira Casket with the Inscription of King Chang were discovered during this process. King Wideok’s (birth name Chang) purpose for building the temple as well as the year of its construction is clearly inscribed on the casket, which was a reliquary used to store the remains of Buddha or Buddhist monks.

005

Contrary to Sabiseong, which was Baekje’s last capital, the reproduction of Wiryeseong, the kingdom’s early-period capital, shows a very different appearance. An earthen rampart, the Wiryeseong palace, and dugout huts have been erected, and a panoramic view of Sabigung Palace can be seen standing atop of the earthen rampart. You can also try dabbling in traditional folk games such as yutnori or neolttwigi at the Living Culture Village, which shows the lifestyles of the city’s various social classes. In addition to artifacts, the Baekje Historical Museum utilizes a variety of media, including video, graphics, miniature models and more to foster understanding of Baekje’s history and culture. The museum also organizes some hands-on programs for visitors such as trying on traditional costumes or rubbing inscriptions using traditional patterns.

Baekje Cultural Land not only offers historical attractions like Sabiseong, but also various modern facilities such as a resort, outlet, golf course and more. Its wide variety of attractions make it possible for visitors to enjoy recreation and shopping in addition to their touring. If you are staying at the Lotte Buyeo Resort (a five to ten minute walk away), or visiting Sabiseong, it would be amiss not to enjoy the shopping course offered by the Buyeo Branch of Lotte Outlet.

The exterior of this outlet is unlike others of its kind. Traditional hanok-style roof tiles have been laid on top of a modern outlet building, which has been uniquely modeled after a Korean fortress. At the outlet’s central square is a pavilion and pond reproducing Baekje’s Gungnamji Pond. There are also various outdoor décor including flags, stone lanterns, and statues reminiscent of a fortress, all of which have been carefully installed in order to evoke the atmosphere of Baekje.

008

Consisting of two floors above ground and one underground, the outlet touts more than 120 popular brand-name stores (especially sports brands), including Coach, Kolon Sport, The North Face, Bean Pole, Adidas and more. Shoppers will usually find discounted products at about 50% off normal prices, and sometimes up to 80% off. Another must-visit shopping destination is the ‘Buyeo Hyangto Teuksanmulgwan,’ which gathers and sells products special to Chungnam and Buyeo. Along with Buyeo’s local brand Goodtrae, the store offers various agricultural and household products, as well as souvenirs.

009

Constructed in 2010 inside the Baekje Cultural Land, the Lotte Buyeo Resort is famous for its unique architecture, which brings together the themes of tradition and modernity. Two curved buildings resembling a vertically sliced donut stand next to each other, and their exteriors are filled with dormer windows that light up with the twelve Korean traditional colors of dancheong. In front of the resort is Korea’s largest circular corridar in the style of a hanok.

The true charm of Lotte Buyeo Resort shines through at night rather than day. When the lights are turned on at the hanok corridor, its structure and form appear more distinctly, and the many colors of the dancheong glow softly from the buildings’ exterior. The scenery of the resort from inside of the corridor is also superb. The curves of the corridor and resort are in harmony with each other, and each angle seems to show yet another aspect and charm.

23

The guestrooms at the resort are available as condo-style or hotel-style, the former allowing cooking. Although it is a resort, the facilities, atmosphere and service are maintained at high quality hotel standards. Like the resort’s exterior, the interior of the guestrooms are modern and impeccably clean, and tinged with traditional elements. Guests sleep soundly in the luxurious goose down bedding, and can access the Internet at high speeds through the room’s exclusive Wi-Fi.

25

Additional amenities include restaurants, the water park, saunas, barbecue grills, and coin-operated laundry rooms. The water park especially appeals to families as it offers various water-related games for children and spa facilities for adults. In addition, guests who stay overnight at the resort may use the saunas at a 30% discount.

Situated off the Cheollipo coast on the Taean Peninsula, the Cheollipo Arboretum offers beautiful scenery of the sea well as of its natural treasures. The arboretum can be reached on foot from Mallipo Beach, one of Taean’s leading beaches, in about twenty minutes. The arboretum is relatively small in size, and can be toured slowly in about two hours. However, the arboretum maintains more than 15,000 plant species – the most in all of Korea – and in 2000 it received the official recognition as one of the ‘world’s most beautiful arboretums’ by the International Society of Arboriculture.

Before beginning the visit to the arboretum in earnest, take a look at the suggested paths located on the information map near the entrance. The first scenery offered by the arboretum is a botanical garden of aquatic plants that live in a pond, including the lotus flower. The white building with round roof across the pond is a memorial dedicated to the life of Dr. Min Byeong-gal, who established the arboretum and devoted his entire life to it. An exhibition is offered on the second floor, and a café and souvenir shop are on the first floor.

30

The founder of the arboretum, Dr. Min Byeog-gal, was an American naval officer whose original name was Carl Ferris Miller. After arriving in Korea in 1946, it is said that he fell in love with Korean culture and decided to settle here. Dr. Min was the first foreigner to become naturalized in Korea, and he was fascinated with the beauty of Cheollipo. In forty years, he transformed its barren land into an earthly paradise.

Dr. Min’s affections and efforts remain visible throughout the arboretum. He maintained active exchanges with arborial societies and institutions, gathered seeds one by one, taught himself botany, and made the Wando horned holly, a rare species that only grew in Korea, known to the world. The 400+ species of magnolia at the arboretum, especially the rarer kinds that are not commonly spotted, draw the crowd’s attention. Come spring, camellias, daffodils, tulips and other countless small flowers fill the arboretum with their bright petals. In addition, the oceanic climate make the flowers last longer.

012

There is a walking trail that begins off the western hill where visitors can stroll accompanied by the sound of waves. Along the trail, visitors can spot an islet called Nangsaeseom Island across the Cheollipo Coast, and pass several wooden houses, including Haesongjip. The hanok (traditional Korean housing) scattered throughout the arboretum are guesthouses that can be used to stay overnight with an advanced reservation. At the rest area located near the trail’s exit, benches placed in front of the sea offer visitors a chance to deeply engrave the beautiful seaside scenery of the arboretum in their hearts.

Lunch with fresh seafood at ‘Dolseom Hoetjip’

There are many restaurants specializing in hoe (freshly prepared raw fish) using seafood caught around the coast near Mallipo Beach (great for taking strolls), located on the way to Cheollipo Arboretum. Dolseom Hoetjip, located near the seashore, serves a wide variety of seafood-based dishes, including kalguksu (noodle soup) with clams, seafood doenjang jjigae (bean paste stew), hoedeopbap (rice with raw fish), jeonbokjuk (porridge with abalone). Because it serves many dishes that can be enjoyed alone, the restaurant is ideal for quick lunches whether traveling alone or in a group. The bajirak kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup with Manila clams) is especially delicious. Its broth is reminiscent of the refreshing and clear sea, and it is presented with huge, generous servings of clams.

015

Every mid-April when the arrival of spring is no longer in doubt, the Taean Tulip Festival is held at the town of Nam-myeon, in Taean County. The festival venue, located near Mageompo Beach, gets ready to greet the visitors with 1.2 million bright and colorful tulips every year. Such an opportunity to see so many varieties of tulips gathered at one place is a rare event indeed. Because flowering time differs by variety, special techiques were introduced from the Netherlands, where tulips originated. Only after extending the flowering times of certain varities and applying other methods through sustained effort could festival-goers enjoy so many tulips in full bloom, swaying to and fro in the wind.

Anyone entering the festival grounds and seeing the endless fields of colorful tulips unfolding before their eyes will find themselves swooning. Tulips in yellow, red, pink, white, violet, and other deep and beautiful colors difficult to describe with words have been planted densely right next to each other. In addition, the tulips have been planted to form shapes such as butterflies, snails, or the Korean flag, which can only be made out when seen from above.

016

There are also other flowers at the Taean Tulip Festival. Daffodils, lilies, pansies, lupinus and other spring flowers have been planted throughout the festival grounds, and to the east, a large field of canola flowers seems to cover the ground like a yellow carpet. To the left of the pond, located at the center of the festival, are the five-color garden, made by planting tulips of five different colors in rows, and a rest area covered by shade. If there was ever an occasion to take photos, this festival is it! Try taking photos of iconic windmills reminiscent of the Netherlands, tulips, rabbits (the festival mascots), and even turtle sculptures.

40

The festival would not be complete without restaurants serving various Korean dishes and traditional spirits, and a snack corner offering coffee and simple snacks. A handful of programs are also available such as face painting, shooting arrows, catching goldfish, craftwork with beads and more.

When the evening arrives, the tulip festival is transformed into a fantastic festival of lights. A grand spectacle consisting of sculptures made using over 4 million LED lightbulbs present yet another wonderful sight to festival goers.

Gegukji – A specialty dish from Chungnam

Gegukji is a specialty dish from Chungnam that was developed when food was scarce. Seasonal seafood caught from the Yellow Sea, such as crabs, shrimp, clams, and oysters are boiled together in a pot packed with aged pumpkin, radish, cabbage, and mushrooms, along with geotjeori kimchi. The resulting broth is both dark and spicy. The dish was also introduced in the TV show One Night, Two Days as a delicacy made with kimchi. It costs about 30,000 won for two portions.
