Dazzling Donggung and Wolji at Midnight than Daytime

The best places to see the night view in Gyeongju would be Donggung and Wolji. In 674, King Munmu made Donggung for princes to take shelter and created an artificial pond Wolji. At here he raised rare plants and animals, and held royal feast or festivals. During Japanese occupation, 26 buildings at Donggung had been greatly damaged, and now three of the buildings have been restored including Imhaejeon with a beautiful walking trail created at Wolji to form the best place to see the night views in Gyeongju.

Imhaejeon meaning 'palace facing the sea' is said to symbolize the sea. The center of the pond was given many curves to make it look wider than its actual size, and three small artificial islands were created inside of it. The view of it from the Imhaejeon seems as though facing a sea and you will be impressed of its cool view. When the sun starts to go down, the lightings turn on one by one and beautiful buildings reflected on the water create a fantastic night view.

The walking trail made along the surrounding area of Wolji has overgrown old trees seeming as though walking through a forest. There are many night lights installed and is great to enjoy the night view while walking the path. Inside Imhaejeon you can see the past image of Donggung and Wolji from a displayed model and artifacts of Wolji. The relics excavated from Wolji are exhibited at Gyeongju National Museum at Wolji Hall as well.

The third building encountered, Donggung building / Walking trail along the pond

Hwangnam Bread (Gyeongju Bread) and Chalbori Bread

At Gyeongju, you must try hwangnam bread and chalboribbang. Inside the round and thick hwangnam bread, there is a bean paste fillings made of beans grown in Gyeongju. The name ‘hwangnam bread’ got its name from the fact that the store was first started in Hwangnam-dong. As it became popular the bread stores all over Gyeongju started selling it with the name ‘Gyeongju Bread.’ Chalboribbang bread is a baked by a dough made of chalbori (barley) grown from Gyeongju and red bean fillings, and is less sweet and softer than hwangnam bread. The freshly baked hwangnam bread and chalboribbang bread are mouth-watering.
