Tour of Goryeo and Josun Dynasty’s Historical Sites in Ganghwa-do

Ganghwa-do is an island that has the traces of Korean history from prehistoric to modern times. There are UNESCO World Heritage-designated dolmen and Chamseongdan Altar where the kings of Korean peninsula's first former nation Gojoseon (BC 2333 founding) has performed ancestral rites to the sky. Also during Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392), the king evacuated here from the Mongolian invasion and the library of the royal family existed during Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

Goryeogung Palace Site, Ganghwa Anglican Church, and Yongheunggung Palace are also close by to take a walk around.

Goryeogung Palace Site is where the King stayed for 39 years from year 1232 when Mongolian invasion had taken place. Currently, only the grounds of the palace are left over after recurring wars but Oegyu Pavilion and Gwanhwa (two Royal library of the Josun Dynasty),and Dongjong Bell (used to tell the time when Ganghwa Fortress gate is about to close/open) remains. Inside Oegyu Pavilion the copy of Uigwe which is written of the schedules of the royal events that was held place in the past are exhibited with other historical materials.

Ganghwa Anglican Church with hanok roof / Rectory building inside the church

Ganghwa Anglican Church is the first Anglican cathedral built in 1900. The cross above the hanok roof seem as though like a traditional Buddhist temple but the praying area inside is decorated in basilica Western-style. The Church consists of a chapel and priest’s office, and Korean traditional bell can be found instead of western bells usually seen in churches. It is a cozy cathedral, but it signifies as a religious institution reflecting the encounter of East-West.

Yongheunggung Palace, a rustic atmosphere of the Chosun Dynasty household.

After going down a few steps out the back door, you can see Yongheunggung Palace where the

Cheoljeong (1849 ~ 1863), the 25th King of Josun Dynasty lived during childhood before throne. Cheoljeong who had the nickname ‘Ganghwa Bachelor’ lived in Gwanhwa during his exile. The name ‘Palace’ of Yongheunggung seems very awkward due to its cozyness. There are four buildings including regular household building, and the trees surrounding the large wooden hanok house create a cozy atmosphere. There are stories that Cheoljeong fell in love with a woman named ‘Bongi,’ and from that legend the area near Yongheunggung Palace became a walking course called ‘Ganghwa Bachelor First Love Road.’

The vast tidal flats and sea at Janghwari Sunset Village

Sky, Sea, and Land is Redden at Janghwari Sunset Village

Ganghwado is one of three best places to see the sunsets of west coast. Along the coastal road leading to the Janghwari area from Dongmak Beach of the southern part of Ganghwado, there are many spots to see beautiful sunsets. Janghwari is such a popular site for sunset that two of the village 'haeneomyi village’ and 'nakjo village' has the meaning of sunset. It is located on Ganghwa-do south-west area where you can enjoy the sunset until late hours.

Upon entering the village, ‘Janghwari Sunset Village’ sign is posted along with the village map.

There are paddy field and farms from the entrance to the coast, and an observatory is located to take pictures of the sunset. At the endless mudflats and small sandy beaches you can enjoy sunbathing. When walking on the trail from the observatory to shore, you will see a sign that says ‘Gwanghwa Nadeuri-gil.’ Arriving 2-3 hours before sunset to take a walk before seeing the sunset is another good course. The sunset is around 6~7 p.m. during the summer and 5~6 p.m. during winter so you must arrive before time.

‘Gwanghwa Nadeuri-gil’ extends to the small hills after the end of the walking path. When you go down the hills you arrive at a beach of tidal-flat and strangely shaped rocks. It is interesting to watch crabs, octopus, clams, and other marine creatures hiding inside the mud pores. After taking a stroll the sun will soon start to go down and the view of the sunset will start. When you start to see the red sun reddening the horizon, you will be busy taking photos of it.

The main gate of the restored palace 'Seungpyeongmun'

'Oegyu Pavilion' the Royal library of the Josun Dynasty

The Exhibition of Uigwe Pictures inside Oegyu Pavilion

Shellfish that live in tidal flats / Walking path along the shore

‘Gwanghwa Nadeuri-gil’ extends to the small hills after the end of the walking path. When you go down the hills you arrive at a beach of tidal-flat and strangely shaped rocks. It is interesting to watch crabs, octopus, clams, and other marine creatures hiding inside the mud pores. After taking a stroll the sun will soon start to go down and the view of the sunset will start. When you start to see the red sun reddening the horizon, you will be busy taking photos of it.
